Exit from SI3 Fund with Acquisition of Wobby by Actian

Shaping Impact announces the successful exit of its portfolio company Wobby, which has been acquired by Actian Germany GmbH, part of HCLSoftware, the global software division of the HCL Group. The transaction, made last month, marks the first exit from Shaping Impact’s SI3 fund.

Wobby, an Antwerp-based AI startup, was originally created to help journalists work with data more easily and reliably. The idea was simple: give journalists a platform that allows them to quickly explore datasets and find accurate information. In a time where public debate is often polarized, the goal was to support fact-based reporting and make trustworthy data more accessible.

Over time, the product evolved beyond the journalistic use case toward a broader market. Wobby developed technology that allows users to ask questions to their data in natural language and receive reliable answers, making advanced analytics accessible beyond traditional data teams.

Along that journey, the team gained an important insight about the future of AI-driven analytics: it only works at scale when it is deeply connected to metadata and data governance. Intelligence without context simply doesn’t scale. This vision strongly aligns with Actian’s long-standing expertise in data intelligence.

Actian has spent decades helping organizations connect, manage, govern and analyze their data. By combining that foundation with Wobby’s agentic analytics technology, the companies aim to create a new generation of self-service analytics that is fast, contextual and trustworthy.

For Wobby, joining Actian provides the opportunity to continue developing its technology within a global platform that already supports thousands of enterprises worldwide. What started as a startup in Antwerp will now grow further as part of a large international data and AI ecosystem.

Dave Dirks, partner at Shaping Impact, commented:

“We’re proud of what the Wobby team has built in a relatively short time. Joining Actian gives the technology and the team the right environment to continue growing at global scale.”
